We were discussing rimming in the office the other day and the one thing I found really surprising was that even though everyone admitted to doing it (some regularly, some on occasion, some only once) no one really wanted to talk about it and the subject was swiftly moved onto cricket (yes we do actually talk about things other than sex here at F-Buddy).
Anilingus or oral-to-anus contact is part of normal sexual practise these days. There’s got to be a reason dog’s sniff each other’s butts to say ‘hello’ right? So why is it that a lot of people (including some of my colleagues) still feel a little shy when talking about rimming?
I decided to conduct a little investigation of my own and discovered that there is a lot more to rimming then simply licking out your partner’s ass.
“What the heck is a rimjob?”
Sheila Broslovsky, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
Rimming is simply the process of using your tongue to lick and stimulate the anus. The ass has a cluster of nerve endings that coalesce right at the tip of the anal canal so stimulating that area can provide intense sexual sensations. It’s not unheard of for people to black out whilst receiving a rimjob from their partner.
And it’s not limited by sexual orientation. Gay, straight, bi....everyone's doing it.
“I’m a massive fan of girl’s butts! I love my girlfriend’s ass and rim her a lot. We’ve been doing it for months. She loves it. I love it. The weird thing is I never thought I would but once I tried it for the first time, it’s become a bit of an addiction.”

To Rim or Not To Rim
Having talked to a lot of people about rimming, there is one reason that keeps coming through regarding why people are afraid to try it.
“There’s a huge stigma around the backside. It’s considered a ‘no go’ zone by many people. Why would you want to lick an area where shit comes out? It’s like asking someone to go and open up the trash bag and eat whatever’s inside for dinner.”
Penelope, 28, Brisbane
Penelope has a point; why would we voluntarily lick out an area we know for a fact ‘poo poo’ comes out of? Worse yet, what if you’re halfway through a rimjob and you come away with a little faecal matter on your tongue?
That’s enough to put me off rimming for life!
…yet I still like doing it.
How to rim safely and successfully
There are two words that I’m now going to share with you and they are perhaps the most important two words you’ll ever hear when it comes to rimming.
WASH IT!
WASH IT!
WASH IT!
and
WASH IT!
The fear of a dirty butt has much to do with why people pause before taking their tongue down there. This is easily solved by having a good shower before sex taking care to clean out your assholes thoroughly. If you’re feeling exotic you can even use some special shower gel around the anus to provide a little fruity surprise for your partner when they dive in. But for God’s sake; wash it first!
Risks
Yes it’s true there are the possibilities of cuts and tears to the skin that can expose both partners to STIs including E.Coli, Hepatitis A,B or C, Herpes 1 & 2 along with other nasty little parasites. So if in doubt, play it safe and use a barrier method. You can tear a condom and spread it over the anus limiting the skin-on-skin exposure without reducing the sensation. In fact knowing you have this type of protection in place, you can let yourself go even more making the rimjob that much more intense.
But always as I’ve mentioned: WASH IT!
And if you’re still not sure, discuss your uncertainty with your partner. At the end of the day you both have to be happy and willing to try it. If you’re not happy, talk about it. Don’t bottle it up.
To Boldly Rim Where No Tongue Has Rimmed Before
Rimming has provided me the most intense orgasms I’ve ever experienced. The women I have rimmed also say it adds to the orgasms they experience too. Take it from me, (and I am not a rimming expert) whatever your orientation, rimming should not be feared. Done properly, it can add yet another powerful string to your sexual bow.
Now if I can only get the people in the office to talk a bit more about it…
