Dutch courage, lowering inhibition, need to relax…how many times have we all said or heard these phrases in a bar or club? We say them just before we take a deep glug from a wine, beer or spirit glass. We think that alcohol will give us the courage we need to have sex with the woman or man we want without fear of not being able to perform. Yet many studies have shown that too much alcohol can bugger up our sex drives. So what’s the deal with alcoholic sex? Should we be having more or less of it?
Lowering Inhibition
If you are a naturally shy or nervous person when it comes to sex, you might actually feel that alcohol is just the thing to help you unzip your trousers and get on with the job. This can be a good thing especially when it comes to casual sex. Excitement at having sex with someone for the first time is often coupled with nerve wracking worry. What if I can’t get it up? What if I come too soon? What I can’t make them come? What if I give a really shit blowjob? A glass of wine or beer can help relax the mood and make you both enjoy the experience more.
When is it too much?
About the time you feel like passing out is about the time you need to consider that perhaps you’ve drunk too much. Alcohol can inhibit as well as release sexual desire. You need to slow down the drinking if you feel more like sleeping then having sex.
Can it help you get it up?
A survey conducted in Australia back in 2009 concluded that men who drank a moderate amount where 30% less likely to have erectile problems than men who drank little to no alcohol. I can safely say with my hand on my heart that a few glasses of wine or beer can sometimes keep me going at it for hours on end, whereas if I’m stone cold sober, I might run out of steam sooner than expected.
Moderation is key
As always moderation is the key to success with anything. If you drink too much, you will pass out on your partner. If you drink nothing or not a lot, then your nerves might get the better of you. Moderation seems to be a strong potential alternative.
